Schoolhouse Reassembly Gets Underway

By Roger Austin. From the Nov - Dec 2011 newsletter.

The disassembled remains of Schoolhouse No. 12 from the Indian River Central School District were moved from LeRay to the Museum grounds in August. Finally, in October, Brian Haggett of Haggett Excavating donated time and equipment to dig holes for the concrete piers that were poured soon after. Builder Menno Schwartz has overseen reconstruction to date. With a crane truck arranged by Grant Thesier from Mr. Grant Construcction, Inc. the original walls were set in place and the roof was rebuilt. Windows, clapboard siding, soffit, fascia trim, ceiling, and finished flooring remain to be installed. Wood shingles will replace the steel roofing. The building is snugly wrapped for winter and work will begin again in the spring. Important support was provided by Charles Alton, Roger Austin, Tom Brothers, Wayne Hill, Bob Smith, Ken Tupper, and Lee Williams.

Board member Charlie Alton has been helping with the schoolhouse project near every day along with Roger Austin. A special thanks to W. Grant Thesier for providing a much needed crane.
